applications
  • Roof sheathing on buildings of Type III, IV and V construction for a distance of 4 feet (1219 mm) on both sides of the fire wall to provide continuity in accordance with Exception 4.3 of IBC Section 706.6 and the exception to IRC Section R302.2.4. The sheathing must be installed with the FirePoint® 2500 overlayment side facing the interior of the building

  • Exterior walls and roof sheathing on buildings of Type I and II construction, as described in IBC Section 603.1, subsection 1. The FirePoint® 2500 overlayment must be laminated to both sides of the panels Wall sheathing for exterior walls in buildings of Type III construction with a two-hour rating or less. The FirePoint® 2500 overlayment must be laminated to each side of the panels and the studs must be of noncombustible material or fire-retardant-treated wood

  • Class A interior finish in accordance with IBC Section 803.1.2. The panels must be installed with the FirePoint® 2500 overlayment side facing the interior of the building

  • Component of fire-resistance-rated construction (IBC Section 703). Refer to assemblies described in Section 4.4 of this report

wall installation
  • Install in accordance with the fire rated assemblies detailed in the guide and on the current version of ICC ES ESR-5116
  • If there is no assembly for a given project, detailed FirePoint panels should be installed vertically with horizontal seams blocked
  • Install FirePoint sheathing in the correct orientation (for single sided FirePoint) as per approved plans Install with a 1/8” gap per panel maintained by a spacer or 10d box nail
  • Panel joints shall be on top of framing members or blocked appropriately at the seams
  • Use prescribed fasteners for each project as per the approved plans. Should plans not exist, use a minimum of 3” long x .131” diameter smooth shank framing nail spaced 6” around the perimeter and 12” in the field of the panel with nail heads flush to the panel. Fasteners should be 3/8” from the outside edge of the panel
  • Other code approved fasteners may be used as they comply with APA standards

handling and general installation
  • As with most wood panel products, it is recommended to wear gloves when handling product to avoid splinters or injury

  • Fastener recommendations are to use code approved fasteners per applications, however, galvanized is ideal, as it may be exposed to weather during installation prior to being covered

  • Fasteners are to be installed as per the nailing schedule prescribed by the approved plans for each project. If there are no plans, a minimum spacing of 6” around the perimeter and 12” in the field of the panel is recommended using a 3”x.131” diameter smooth shank nail driven flush to the panel, while avoiding over driving them

  • Masks are recommended when cutting FirePoint

  • Comply with all local safety and building code regulations when installing product(s) in all approved building applications, such as roof and wall installations

roof installation – coming soon
  • Install in accordance with ICC-ES Report ESR-5116 or as specified by the plans approved by the local jurisdiction where the project is being constructed

  • Face the FirePoint layer downwards toward the attic space and wear non-skid shoes when installing roof sheathing.

  • Install the panel longitudinally with the long dimension of the panel across the supports and span two or more joists/spans

  • Install with a 1/8” gap per panel maintained by a spacer or 10d box nail

  • Panel joints shall be on top of framing members and panels must be staggered each row, so seams do not line up row to row

  • Cover roof sheathing as soon as possible to protect against excessive moisture. As with any wood panel, the panel should be dry with no raised edges prior to covering. Raised edges should be sanded flat before the shingle underlayment is applied

  • If eaves are exposed or unprotected from the bottom side, exterior grade paint must be used to protect panels

  • Allow sheathing to acclimate to ambient moisture before installing roof shingles
